W|N Wins National Ranking for Quality of Its Issued Patents

In an article published in the March/April 2010 edition of Intellectual Asset Management Magazine, W|N ranked 14th nationally in terms of the overall quality of patents issued for its clients, across all industries. Intellectual Asset Management Magazine, which is part of The IP Media Group, approached its patent ratings partner, Ocean Tomo, and asked them to compile a ranking based on patent quality. To create the rankings, Ocean Tomo first selected the top 50 law firms according to the number of U.S. utility patents issued over the trailing three years. Ocean Tomo then used a regression model to calculate a raw probability score for each patent that represents the probability that a patent will be maintained for the full statutory term (meaning that the patent owner is likely to pay the necessary maintenance fees to keep it in force over its full term). Raw scores for each patent were then normalised (referred to as patent "IPQ" score) so that IPQ scores over 100 indicate above average quality (e.g., higher expected maintenance rate), while an IPQ score lower than 100 indicates below average quality. In the overall ranking across all industries, patents issued by W|N for its clients carried an average IPQ score of 116.9, earning it a rank of 14th nationally.

Managing Director and President Rick Nydegger noted that "We were extremely gratified to see that the patents we helped secure for our clients are so highly regarded in terms of their quality. It demonstrates the commitment of our attorneys to providing representation of the highest quality."
